In 1900 Jekyll was one of the most famous gardeners in Britain and has since become one of the most influential gardeners of all time. This exhibition will explore her long and extraordinary life (b.1843-d.1932). Jekyll designed over 400 gardens, many in partnership with Edwin Lutyens, the eminent architect of the day. She was responsible for moving away from highly formal Victorian garden design towards a greater freedom of planting.
Jekyll was a talented musician, composer, artist, interior designer, embroiderer, silversmith, botanist and a central figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement as well as being a political activist and Suffragette. Among her many acquaintances were the leading creative minds of the day including Robert Louis Stevenson, Lord Leighton and Frederic Watts.
We shall be taken on a guided tour of the exhibition after which you may have as much time as you like to view the exhibition and museum on your own. The Lightbox is a new gallery and museum for the Southeast region and we shall be able to have lunch there.
Suggested transport: Train from Warterloo East to Woking and short walk. Trains run frequently from at Waterloo East every 10 minutes or so and an off peak day return ticket should cost £12.30. The journey duration is 24 minutes by fast train.
