Meet artist Caroline Achaintre at Tate Britain: NEW DATE

12 November 2014 at 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

We are honoured to have the chance to meet with London-based artist Caroline Achaintre in the current BP Spotlight Room dedicated to her work at Tate Britain.  Achaintre will be in discussion with UK Friends of NMWA Patron Marcelle Joseph, an active independent curator, author and art adviser.
The work of Caroline Achaintre encompasses a diverse range of media including textiles, ceramics, woodcuts and watercolours. Her sculptures balance on the border between the primitive and the carnivalesque, and between the heritage of craft and more contemporary subcultural strands of sci-fi, gothic and psychedelia. At times menacing, sexual and playful, they allude to early moments in modernism such as German expressionism, while at the same time presenting many contradictions between art and design, fashion and taste, abstraction and figuration.

Achaintre creates anamorphic ceramic mask works, either wall-based or curated on custom-made modular units with their own in-built design references, and wall-based hand-tufted wool works that appear as mutated eagles or tribal abstract paintings. Assembled together to create an atmosphere of threat and the absurd, her fantastical works appear as shamanist tribal masks and objects made to face the fears of the present day.
