Barbara Nessim at V&A

8 May 2013 at 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join us for a special treat: V&A Senior Curator Doug Dodds will lead us on a tour of the V&A’s Barbara Nessim exhibition An Artful Life. Nessim is an American artist whose oeuvre spans the decades from the 1060’s to the present.  She has worked as an illustrator, fashion designer, photographer and ceramicist.  Nessim was also a pioneer in the burgeoning world of digital art.  In fact, in the early 1980’s she is deemed to be among the first artists to harness the computer as an artistic medium. Among her many accomplishments, Nessim created cover illustrations for Time, Rolling Stone, Vogue, and Harpers, among others.  She has designed clothing, shoe and textile lines, as well as ad campaigns for Ralph Lauren, among a variety of others. Nessim’s works have been exhibited worldwide, including at the Kunst Museum, the Louvre, Sweden’s Museum of Modern Art, and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.  Nessim has taught for 25 years at New York’s Parsons School of Design.  And, she was Gloria Steinem’s room-mate for six years when they were both young women trying to make it in the big city!
After touring the Nessim show, we will be free to view other V&A exhibitions, and to have lunch in the stunning V&A café.
The Guardian and the New York Times have recently published articles about Nessim in conjunction with the  V&A retrospective.
