Born and raised in Taiwan, artist Wu Lan-Chiann received her BFA from the Chinese Culture University in Taipei, Taiwan, MA from New York University’s Fine Art Department, and trained under Ou Haonian. Wu Lan-Chiann is well versed in the tradition of Chinese ink paintings but Western influences are particularly noticeable with the use of one-point perspective and the application of light. Her work captures special moments and at the same time represents the invariable and eternal cycle of life and nature. In the late 4th to early 5th century, the renowned painter and philosopher Zong Bin already claimed that a landscape should capture the spirit of nature rather than its physical form.

The curator and director of the East Asian Art Museum Dr Nicole Chiang will lead the tour of the exhibition on the 21st of April starting at 11:30am. The Museum of East Asian Art in Bath is the only museum in the UK solely dedicated to the art and culture of East Asia and contains the largest collection of Asian art outside London. It was opened to the public in 1993 and was founded by Brian McElney OBE, a prominent former lawyer and long-time resident of Hong Kong. After his retirement to the UK, he donated his collection to form the Museum. The collection has been added to by long-term loans and donations by the public over the years.
Dr Chiang is originally from Taiwan, but moved to Canada when she was a teenager. She studied at SOAS and has been with the Museum in Bath since 2014.
This tour has been organised by Felicitas von Droste zu Hülshoff, the Chinese Paintings Programme Co-ordinator of the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology in Oxford.
Trains leave from Paddington at 9:30, arriving at 10:59. The Museum is 15-20 min walk from station through the historic district. Trains also leave from Victoria and Waterloo but take much longer.
Charge:  Friends and Patrons £10, Guests £15 (please book trains/other transport to Bath independently).
Lunch with the curator following the tour, on a shared cost basis.
