SOLD OUT Insight Talk: Women Opera Directors

4 February 2015 at 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

This event is SOLD OUT.   If you RSVP, you will be added to our waitlist.
An occasion of might and pageantry, that is how most of us view opera. Directing such a spectacle demands strength and forcefulness, qualities, we, ashamedly and instinctively, associate more often with men. Robin Norton-Hale challenges our assumptions by exploring, with slides and film clips, the work of four award winning women opera directors: Olivia Fuchs, Phyllida Lloyd, Annilese Miskimmon, Deborah Warner, as well as her own achievements.
All of these women have directed innovative, and in some cases controversial, operatic revivals and new works for opera houses and festivals all over the world. Most have worked in theatre, achieving high acclaim. Maybe some of you saw Olivia Fuch’s stunning interpretation of Hansel und Gretel at Garsington this summer? Phyllida Lloyd is especially known for her work with Opera North and her film adaptation of Mama Mia! Annilese Miskimmon was Artistic Director of Opera Theatre Company (OTC), Ireland’s national touring opera company, before becoming Artistic Director of Danish National Opera in 2012. In April Deborah Warner’s world premiere of Between Worlds will be staged at the Barbican.
Robin Norton-Hale is applauded for creating English versions of classical operas. In 2009, Robin jointly founded OperaUpClose. La Bohème, the company’s first production, directed by and featuring a new English libretto by Robin, won both the Olivier Award for Best Opera and the What’sOnStage Award for Best Off-West End Production in 2011. After an extremely successful four-year residency at the King’s Head Theatre – the company attracted opera lovers as well as many first time attenders – OperaUpClose will concentrate on partnerships with other theatres, such as the Soho Theatre.
Address: Details to follow with RSVP confirmation.
