Salon Series: Deciphering Women Artists' Self-Portraits with Frances Borzello

4 March 2014 at 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Please join us for our first Salon Series featuring experts speaking about historical women artists.
We are honoured to announce that Frances Borzello, art historian, author and lecturer, will speak to UK Friends of NMWA on women artists’ self-portraits through time, and help us to interpret and decode the messages being sent to the viewer. In her lecture she will re-examine a topic she first addressed in her book, Seeing Ourselves: Women’s Self-Portraits, in which Borzello examined work from the 12th Century to modern times. For our morning, she will look in depth at the entry of women artists into the male preserve of fine art, and examine in detail the statements being made through their self-portraits.
Frances Borzello lectures widely, including most recently at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra and at the Hay Literary Festival. She is the author of more than ten books on the history of art. Her latest book, The Naked Nude, is an attempt to account for the discrepancy on gallery walls between the traditional idea of the nude as the pinnacle of artistic beauty and the uncomfortable reality of art’s nudes today, all lumps and bumps and pubic hair. No longer sanitised, they cause the viewer anger and embarrassment. www.francesborzello.co.uk
Coffee, tea and biscuits will be served.
