Violet Manners @ Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum
1 November 2016 - 24 April 2017
Violet Manners, Duchess of Rutland, a celebrated beauty and model for many leading artists in her day, was also an artist in her own right. She exhibited her work in London, at the Royal Academy and at the Russell-Cotes.
She was considered to be queen of the ‘Souls’, a fashionable aristocratic social circle that shared an interest in art, literature and ideas. They were called the ‘Souls’ because they sat and talked about each other’s souls.
This exhibition in our Morning Room shows some of Violet’s drawings of the ‘Souls’ and members of their circle, which were donated to the Museum in the 1970s, and have not been on display for many years.
