Description

We are delighted to offer this special private tour (with a glass of bubbly) of Jutta Koether’s solo exhibit Femme Colonneat Lévy Gorvy. Pietro Pantalani, Associate Director, will delve into Koether’s challenges to art history and why she is considered a “rock star.”

Koether exudes “an irresistible aura of calculated recklessness and an intimidating visual intelligence.”  A true artist’s artist, her work features in the greatest, most sophisticated institutional and private collections across Europe and the United States.

For her first London exhibition with Lévy Gorvy, Jutta borrows a term used by T.J. Clark in an essay about Nicolas Poussin, in which a painting’s standing female labelled “femme-colonne,” or woman column. Jutta challenges the logical assumptions about this figure, questioning her presence, interrogating her column-ness.  The paintings on view extend representational motifs and schemas Koether has developed throughout her career; her signature red hue and reconceptualized female nudes respond to Clark’s academic proposition of uprightness, femininity, and light.

Due to current conditions, places are extremely limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.  Patrons and Friends only.

Cost: Patrons – free; Friends – £20.
